Warm, soft oatmeal contrasts beautifully with juicy berries and crunchy walnuts. Blueberries provide a mild sweetness, while raspberries add a slightly tart flavor that keeps the oatmeal from tasting bland. Walnuts add richness and a nutty crunch, making a simple bowl of oatmeal feel much more substantial.

Oats are particularly valuable because they are a whole grain and an excellent source of soluble fiber. One important type of soluble fiber found in oats is beta-glucan. Research has shown that oat beta-glucan can help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol when consumed regularly as part of a healthy diet. Fiber also slows digestion and helps make oatmeal more filling than many highly refined breakfast foods.

Blueberries and raspberries add much more than sweetness. Both contain vitamin C, fiber, and numerous plant compounds. Berries are particularly rich in anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds responsible for many of their red, purple, and blue colors. Raspberries are also exceptionally fiber-rich for a fruit, so adding a generous handful can considerably increase the fiber content of the breakfast.

Walnuts complement the oats and berries by providing healthy unsaturated fats, protein, fiber, magnesium, and other nutrients. They are especially notable among nuts because they contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. This combination of fat, protein, and fiber also makes walnuts useful for turning a relatively light bowl of oatmeal into a more satisfying meal.

Together, these ingredients create a nicely balanced breakfast. Oats provide complex carbohydrates and fiber; blueberries and raspberries provide fruit, fiber, vitamins, and beneficial plant compounds; and walnuts provide healthy fats and additional protein. Unlike breakfasts based primarily on refined flour and added sugar, the natural combination of whole grains, fruit, and nuts provides nutrients while also helping with fullness.

The dish can be made even more nutritionally complete by preparing the oatmeal with milk or serving it with yogurt, which increases its protein and calcium content. There usually isn’t much need for added sugar because ripe blueberries and raspberries already provide natural sweetness. A little cinnamon can also enhance the perception of sweetness without adding sugar.

Perhaps the biggest advantage is that this is one of those breakfasts where delicious and nutritious naturally overlap. You get warm and creamy oatmeal, bursts of sweet and tart berries, and crunchy, rich walnuts in the same spoonful. At the same time, you’re eating whole grains, fruit, nuts, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial plant compounds—making oatmeal with blueberries, raspberries, and walnuts an excellent everyday breakfast.

Oatmeal with blueberries, raspberries, and walnuts is a naturally sweet, creamy, and satisfying breakfast that combines several different flavors and […]

[6
11,20,14,19,10
post-310","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-breakfast","tag-fiber","tag-fruit","tag-healthy-fats","tag-nuts","tag-protein
["GET
